Storage A Clean Solution
24 October 2008
Rental storage units, also known as self-storage and mini-storage units, are a booming business right now, as storage facilities seem to be cropping up everywhere. People collect more and more items, and their possessions grow out of their attics and basements, forcing them to rent monthly storage units. The appeal of storage units is having access to a clean, safe, well-lit and efficient area for storage. It also helps to get the clutter out of the house and into another place altogether, either for sorting through or keeping for a while.
Storage away from the home or business can be an easy and convenient solution to disorganization and lack of space. Over a lifetime of acquiring belongings, many people simply run out of room to keep it all, but do not want to give everything away because of the sentiment attached to the items.
In the past 45 or so years, tens of thousands of personal storage facilities have sprung up like wildflowers all over the world. The structures are usually made of metal and concrete with roll-up garage-type doors. They are found in all kinds of surroundings, from rural to suburban to urban. In modern times, outside storage units have become like an addition to the house for controlling the overflow of beloved material goods.
The increase in relocation in recent years has also contributed to the wider use of storage units. It is now common for people to live in ten or more different places during their lives. Since they are not staying in a homestead for much of their lives, the things they own have come to represent home to many modern families.
Some people who seek out storage units are retirees, looking to make their living space more manageable by moving to independent senior apartments and assisted living homes. They may be downgrading from a four-bedroom house filled with all their cherished belongings to a one-bedroom apartment. The storage unit becomes the solution to what to do with their possessions before they are ready to sell them or give them to relatives.
The high activity lifestyle of many people contributes to their reasons for having a storage unit. Seasonal sports equipment, such as camping gear, water skis, personal watercrafts, snow boards, tennis rackets, and golf clubs are some of the things people store when the time of year does not call for it. Small closets and lack of attics and basements are other reasons. Some people choose to store for a few months, while others maintain storage units for years. The cost of renting a storage unit is less for those who are willing to sign long-term leases.
Of course, businesses need extra storage too. Many offices rent storage spaces to keep track of old invoices, receipts, and statements. Not too long ago, businesses were using much more paper and less computer files. For a business that has been around a while, all that paper has to go somewhere, at least for the recommended seven years. Many companies also rent storage units to store supplies and equipment, such as those used for a painting and construction company.
Whether the reason for leasing a self-storage space is personal or business-related, here are some tips for maximizing the use of a storage unit:
- Put most used items in the front of the unit for easy access.
- Pack boxes so that they are easy to move and handle.
- Write the contents of the boxes on both top and sides of box for easier finding.
- When stacking boxes, put heavy boxes on the bottom and lighter ones on the top.
- Maximize the space of the unit by disassembling furniture and stacking items strategically.

In Praise of Satin — Wordy Pleasures in Mind inDeed! - Sheets of fun or just Fun in sheets?
11 October 2008
Satin exudes such wonderful images and connotations that it seems to have transcended its own meaning. From this point, perhaps sensual is one of the better descriptions one can find, though of course, there are endless possibilities of its use for conveying such a fascinating variety of over and undertones.
Onomatopoeia-cally pronouncing, the word epitomizes, conveys, abounds with that slithery sound of scintillating seduction, so smoothly stroking the senses as it swishes around savoring those saucy secret seconds that strengthen the soft sequences with a silky suave-icity sweetly secreting its soulful sound saturating this scribe with solicitously sinewy baloney …need I say more! And I seem to have covered a fair few synonyms at the same time.
Imagery invoked from a few moments of thinking allows one to daydream the night away with fanciful fantasies of frolicking in fields of fern in a feeling frenzy of fearlessness fused with …(OK, I know when to stop…well, maybe?)
Satin hits you with its moods of regality, opulence, or just downright “I’m in the mood” flashing billboard or banner. It is thoroughly expressive, exploding on ones senses in a way that you just wouldn’t normally suspect from a piece of cloth. Then again it contradicts itself with that impressively delicate quality of smooth feminine softness lounging there exquisitely in such relaxed pose. It reassures you and soothingly opens you to its timeless side of passive restfulness.
As trimming on ones cot bedding is often where one first comes into contact with this motherly material. It took away the rough edges of life — a bodily knowledge grasped when young minds’ concepts were still blended like baby foods; even earlier still, as one climbed ones mother’s mountains and nestled into those nurturing nipples. Woe there! — Who knows what subconscious powers this tantalizing textile has over us?
As lingerie, which woman would not succumb to that satinicity gently guarding her erogenous charms?
As pajamas, could anyone wish for more erotic pampering?
As bedding, who could not slumber soundly surrounded with such exotic coverings?
As furnishings, would no-one stand for satin slipcover seats?
Air Conditioners Become Energy Efficient
8 October 2008
Did you know that one sixth of all the electricity generated in the United States is used to air condition buildings? With that thought in mind the U.S. Department of Energy is raising the minimum energy efficiency rating for air conditioners as of January 23 2006. Whether it is to reduce consumers’ energy bills or reduce pollution, higher energy efficiency ratings on air conditioners can only be beneficial to everyone involved.
So how do you know the efficiency of your air conditioner? Once way is through an energy efficiency ratio measurement called the SEER. This SEER is used to rate all air conditioners on their efficient use of energy in order to set a standard of environmentally friendly machines. The term SEER stands for seasonal energy efficiency ratio. Generally the higher the number of SEER the air conditioner is given, the more energy efficient it is.
As environmental concerns continually grow the SEER on air conditioners has changed. In 1992 the SEER minimum standard for air conditioners was 10 and by 2006 it was rumored that it would be changed to a minimum of 13 and voila, that will be the new standard when this new law is passed in January. A change from a 10 rating to a 13 rating in SEER roughly translates into a 30 percent improvement in efficiency of that particular air conditioner.
The only downside to a higher SEER or energy efficient air conditioning unit would be the increased purchase and installation cost. Most people don’t mind however because the train of thought is that an increase in front end cost will more than be surpassed by increased savings in energy bills over the long haul.
Now if you thought the fact that one sixth of the electricity generated in the United States is used for air conditioning was cool, this is even better. The Department of Energy estimates that by 2030, the changes in energy and SEER laws will save enough electricity to power 26 million homes for a whole year.
What else can you do to save energy besides buying a better air conditioner? The biggest thing is proper maintenance of your cooling unit. Regular checks for proper function and changing the air conditioner filter when required will help the unit run at optimum efficiency. The last thing and it may already be too late, is to make sure your air conditioner is installed properly by a qualified technician.

The enviroment is our greatest asset. Ray Burton writes information about home appliances such as air conditioners and furnaces and ways to cut cost and energy usage.
Creating Positive Environments for Home and Office
21 August 2008
From the office cubicle to the executive penthouse suite and from apartments to mansions, people are trying to carve out spaces to call their own. Outside, the world may be a stressful place but inside these spaces, people strive to create positive environments where they can live and work happily and peacefully. It may seem like a fairy tale to some. However, for others, it is a way to survive many of the negative effects of stressful living.
In the book, Future Shock, Alvin Toffler prophesized that the speed at which technology would develop and be introduced would in the end overwhelm many people. He foretold a future where human’s inability to keep up would cause stress and depression. Here we are over twenty years later and his words have come to pass. Even greeting card companies study the trends and in Karen Moore’s book, You Can Write Creating Cards she cites these trends forecasted by lifestyle trend researchers that people would:
-make their homes more comfortable places in order to avoid the outside world.
-buy affordable little luxuries for themselves or for their homes.
-seek broader awareness of spiritual things.
-desire to be seen as unique and special.
-feel somewhat overwhelmed by responsibilities.
-like alternative medicines and holistic health.
-question belief systems of previous generations.
-be genuinely interested in caring for the environment.
So, how would one describe a positive place? Appealing? Attractive? Humans are complex beings, even if they cannot keep up with nanotechnology and super computers. For an environment to feel positive or attractive, it needs to be appealing to the senses, particularly - sight, sound, smell, or touch. The more senses that are stimulated simultaneously, the more appealing, attractive, and positive the situation is perceived. Any thing that detracts from that perception is usually judged as negative, instead.
Although some architects, space planners, interior designers, and Feng Shui consultants have been addressing the issue of creating positive environments over the past years, most of the general public is just beginning to investigate the possibilities. Ways to turn up the ‘positivity’ of a space, that appeal to one or more senses at time, might include:
-a fountain made of various materials.(sight-sound-touch)
-a contemporary, mixed media painting or sculpture.
(sight-touch-smell, if oil paints are used)
-chimes or bells.(sight, sound, touch)
-incense, potpourri, and aromatherapy.(smell, sight,touch)
-Instruments.(sight-touch-sound)
-Plants and flowers. (sight, touch, smell)
Situations perceived by the brain as positive gives people a sense of well-being and happiness. When in this state, sometimes called euphoria, the domino effect occurs.
-People become open to more positive stimuli.
-Concentration and performance improves.
-Self-confidence and self-assurance soars.
-Creativity blossoms.
-Handling stress becomes easier.
In today’s environment, more and more people will be searching for ways to reduce stress. By creating positive environments, they will be able to do that no matter where they live or work. In doing so, how they live and work will be better, too.

Office Furniture for Your Home Office
14 August 2008
If you are looking to create a home office or you are looking to redecorate your current one, you will want to consider the various types of office furniture available. Having the right office-furniture in your can make all the difference in the world: a comfortable home office is an efficient home office. Therefore, let’s consider the various types of office furniture and what might be right for you and your personal tastes.
First, you will want to select furniture for your home office that is just the right color. Neutral colors are wonderful for offices as are natural wood colors. However, don’t feel confined to neutral colors if you prefer wild colors like hot pink and neon green! If that makes you more comfortable, then feel free to purchase your office-furniture in your favorite colors! Remember, you will be spending quite a bit of time in this room so what makes you happy and suits your tastes is what is most important.
Secondly, when you are choosing office furniture, you will want to purchase that which is ergonomically correct. For instance, you will want a chair that you can sit in that allows you to comfortably rest your feet on the floor. You will also want a desk that is at a good height that does not cause you to bend or reach to gain access to your keyboard, if you have a computer. Ensuring that you have ergonomically correct furniture also helps you ensure that you avoid disorders like carpel tunnel or other disorders associated with repetitive motion.
Third, when looking for office furniture, you should always consider your maximum comfort over style. Your comfort is of the utmost importance because you will be working for long periods of time. Therefore, a chair that provides back support is far more important than a chair made of leather which looks really nice behind the redwood desk you have purchased.
Fourth, when choosing office furniture, cost is always a consideration. However, once again you should not compromise your comfort for cost. For instance, if you purchase a chair because it is inexpensive and you find it uncomfortable, you will eventually find yourself spending additional money for a new and comfortable chair. Better to go all out when you purchase your office furniture and get something that you will be content with for some time to come than to spend additional funds down the road because you took the inexpensive route to begin with.
Finally, buying used office furniture can save you a bundle, as long as you keep the above-mentioned concepts in mind. Always remember that your comfort is paramount when you are buying office furniture. In the end, you will find when you meet the demands of your comfort, you will be far happier with your office furniture selection.

Laminate wood flooring is a great option to typical hardwood floors and ceramic tile. One great characteristic about laminate flooring is that it is scratch resistant and more durable than real wood while providing a similar look to real wood.
Due to the ease of installation, laminate wood flooring can be installed without the use of a contractor. This means that you save a pretty penny on installation fees since you can easily do it yourself.
Laminate wood flooring comes in a variety of different colors and textures, mainly in the range of yellows, reds, and browns.
Laminate wood flooring also comes in a variety of prices. This of course, depends on many factors such as color and texture. However, if you are looking to buy in bulk you can save money. Builddirect.com, for instance, offers a number of high-end laminate wood floor brands at different prices. Prices can vary in laminate wood flooring. A large portion of laminate flooring can range anywhere from about $0.80 to around $1.60.
Lead time is one factor you do need to consider aside from price when purchasing wood laminate flooring. You could see backorder times ranging anywhere from 1-8 weeks depending on quantity and the style you choose. If you desperately need to refloor parts of your house for an upcoming event, you may be able to arrange something with the seller.
If time is not a factor for you, you may consider having the shipper ship the laminate flooring with the cheapest (slowest) shipping method. Due to the size and weight of laminate flooring, your shipping prices will not exactly be cheap. In order to save some money on shipping costs, you may find yourself waiting several weeks for delivery. However, you can save up to 50% by scheduling a slower delivery time. Be sure to check with the seller before making any purchase in order to find out what option is right for you.
