Asheville NC Cabin Rentals – North Carolina Waterfalls Provide Great Outings for Visitors
7 April 2009
Although Mount Mitchell is the highest summit in the U.S. east of the Mississippi River, some say western North Carolina is also home to the easts tallest waterfall, Upper Whitewater Falls in Transylvania County.
Asheville NC cabin rental guests are just a short drive from Upper Whitewater Falls. It’s only 52 miles from the city of Asheville, about 18 miles southwest of Brevard, N.C. The attraction is part of a cluster of waterfalls along the borders of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina.
Glassmine Falls is another contender for the title of tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. At more than 800 feet, it is certainly one of the tallest. The debate comes largely because Glassmine Falls is ephemeral, its highest rate of flow comes after heavy rains, and at some times of the year, it dries up completely. When it’s running at a trickle or more it can be seen from the Blue Ridge Parkway overlook around milepost 361 near Asheville.
But for tourists enjoying vacations in one of the many Asheville NC cabin rentals, literally hundreds of waterfalls of all shapes, sizes and water volume are within a short drive in western North Carolina, east Tennessee, upstate South Carolina and north Georgia.
What could be the best-known waterfall in the area is Looking Glass Falls, just 9 miles north of Brevard, N.C., off U.S. Highway 276.
