In terms of deaths caused by various forms of cancer, lung cancer ranks second only to breast cancer. The National Cancer Institute recently reported that an estimated 172,570 new cases of lung cancer will be reported this year and that 163,510 American will die from this disease.

Lung cancer is caused predominantly by smoking. One expert says that in the case of Small Cell Lung Carcinoma (cancer), it is almost always caused by smoking.

Lung cancer is called lung cancer because it begins in the lungs. The right lung has three sections, the left lung has two. Each section is called a lobe. Sometimes the term “bronchogenic cancer” is used to refer to lung cancer as most lung cancers begin in one of the two breathing tubes, the bronchi, in the lungs.

There are two major types of lung cancer. One is the Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) mentioned in the previous paragraph. The other is Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer has three subtypes: Adenocarcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma and Large Cell Undifferentiated Carcinoma. NSCLC is the least “serious” of the two types. In fact, if it is detected early, it is possible that it can be cured with surgery.

Andenocarcinoma accounts for about 40 percent of lung cancer cases in the U.S. It is the most common cancer among women and can be seen in non-smokers. Squamous Cell Carcinoma represents about 30 to 35 percent of lung cancers and tends to stay localized in the chest longer than other types of lung cancer. Large Cell Undifferentiated Carcinoma represents only about five to 15 percent of lung cancers in the U.S. The incidence of this type of cancer seems to be decreasing.

The worst and most aggressive form of lung cancer is Small Cell Lung Cancer. It represents only about 15 to 20 percent of all lung cancers. It spreads to the lymph nodes and other organs more quickly than NSCLC, but seems more responsive to chemotherapy drugs.

Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer is described in stages – Stage I through IV. WebMD recently reports survival rates of NSCLC as:

Stage 1A or 1B with no lymph node involvement has a five-year survival rate of 43 to 64 percent when treated with surgery.

Stage IIA or IIB with a single lymph node involvement, when treated with surgery, has a five-year survival rate of 20 to 40 percent.

Stage IIIA with a single lymph node involvement in the center of the chest, when treated with surgery has a five-year survival rate of 15 to 25 percent.

Stage IIIB with lymph node involvement in the chest and neck, when treated with radiation without other treatment, has a five-year survival rate of five to seven percent.

Stage IIIB with lymph node involvement in the chest and neck, when treated with radiation and chemotherapy, has a five-year survival rate between seven and 17 percent.

Stage IV with extensive lymph node involvement or cancer that has spread to other organs, hen treated with chemotherapy and palliative care to reduce symptoms and increase comfort has a one-year survival rate.

The prognosis is much bleaker for patients with Small Cell Lung Cancer. This form of cancer is found in two stages: limited or extensive. The limited version is that which is found in only one lung and nearby lymph nodes. The extensive type has spread outside the lung to other parts of the chest or body (metastasized). Limited SCLC when treated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy has an average survival time of 18 to 20 months. The extensive form of SCLC when treated with chemotherapy has a survival time of 10 to 12 months. Ttwo-year survival rate is one to three percent, and the five-year survival rate less than two percent.

The majority of people diagnosed with SCLC will die despite the best available treatment.

While surgery plays the most important part in the treatment of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer, chemotherapy is always the chosen treatment for Small Cell Lung Cancer. In the case of limited stage SCLC, radiation therapy may also be used as the cancer is still localized to the chest area where radiation can be focused.

Small Cell Cancer Cells are so small they cannot be seen on scans. Even in the case of limited stage SCLC, it is possible for some cells to break away from the primary cancer and migrate to anywhere in the body. For this reason, chemotherapy is the preferred treatment as it treats the whole body, unlike radiation therapy which must be focused on a selected area. In act, chemotherapy is the preferred treatment for both limited and extensive stage Small Cell Lung Cancer.

As a teenager growing up in a small town in Oregon in the 50’s, I had no desire to finish high school. For one thing, my dad never finished. Also, my big ambition in life was to be a cartoonist, and I was, in fact, already selling some of my cartoons to small magazines. My hero, Walt Disney, had never finished high school, and I felt that if he could quit and succeed, so could I. But my mother would never hear of it, so reluctantly, I continued to go.

In about my sophomore year I began to sell cartoons to a small magazine in Thousand Oaks, California. It was called Computer News and was a trade journal about the computers of that time. These were nothing like the laptops we know today…they were huge Univac computers which filled an entire room. I knew nothing about them, but still somehow managed to come up with cartoons about them.

In my correspondence with the editor, a Mr. Jackson Granholm, I mentioned my desire to quit high school and go into cartooning full time. He wrote back urging me to stay in school, spouting off all the reasons why school was important. To convince him I knew better, I told him about how Walt Disney had quit.

A few weeks later, I was waiting at the mailbox, waiting to see if any magazines had bought any of the cartoons I had recently submitted. When the mail came I was quite surprised to see one letter addressed to me from Walt Disney studios.

It was from their personnel department, and I was sure it was a job offer. Not so. They told me that Mr. Jackson Granholm had contacted them on my behalf and explained my attitude about finishing high school. They advised me very strongly to stay in high school, pointing out that they never even considered applicants without a high school education and preferred some college.

It took the winds out of my sails, but I guess it taught me two things: I was no Walt Disney, and times had changed. I finished high school, and went on for two years of college. Years later I worked for Walt Disney studios, as well as a couple of other major film studios, plus I have been doing cartooning on a freelance basis for years. To date I have been published in hundreds of publications, and I admit the college education was no deterrent at all.

Glamour Cars

14 February 2009

Long and sleek! With Elvis as the hero of the day during the
1950s, whatever he drove become the car of the day. And
Elvis loved the glamour that shiny new tail-fins exhibited.
His fans loved them, too, which led to over thirty heart-
stopping models being designed during the 1950s. No one
cared back then whether cars were gas-guzzlers or whether
the paint job would last, or whether the shiny chrome that
protruded out the back begged to have dents inserted within
the first few weeks.

The appeal of cars during the 1950s was more than just
Elvis. It was prestige and glamour for even the average
working person. The feeling of luxury seeped into one’s
feelings and emotions, and romance bloomed with respect
while riding in these elegant vehicles.

The Chrysler Town & Country Newport coupe which came out in
1950 didn’t have fins (they started creeping into the design
around 1952). Yet it wasn’t the typical car of the 1940s.
Almost a dinosaur compared to today’s styles, the Newport
featured distinctive, external wood framing (referred to as
being a ‘Woodie’) and strongly appealed to the hunter and
sportsmen.

Pontiac had a mascot – an Indian Chief- whose unsmiling face
formed the base of the front hood. His headdress consisted
of streaks of chrome sliding back over the hood and being
picked up again on the trunk. Sleek looking! Everyone wanted
a car with a personality, and the Indian Chief gave the
Pontiac one.

Because the cars of the early 1950s had a somewhat dowdy
appearance but reflected the potential of sparkling glamour,
car designers became aggressive in their creativity. By 1957
and 1958 the designers produced disastrously overblown
responses. Sharp clean fins reached in all directions. They
were streaked with chrome, and somewhere in the middle a
body was grafted into them. Bright yellows! Passionate reds!
Baby blues! And regardless of the weather where one lived,
convertibles were in, even if you never lowered the top.

The intense competition among the car manufacturers meant
that each model became extinct quickly. Planned obsolescence
meant the customers had to choose between buying a new car
each year or being a social leper. Because of the expense of
redesigning all models every year, the manufacturers took to
keeping the inner workings of the cars basically the same
and only changing the outward look.

By 1958 some models, such as the 1958 Oldsmobile, were
beginning to be called ‘ugly.’ Some even said it looked
like a brick with a hardtop sitting on it. However, the
indented chrome on the doors still caught one’s eye of
respect.

All systems self-destruct from within. The era of the
glamour cars had outdone itself and common sense dictated
that what would follow in the 1960s would be based on
performance, a concern for the environment, and conservative
packaging. During the 1960s people weren’t impressed with
external appearances to the exclusion of what existed
underneath. This attitude was reflected towards both people
and cars. Yet, who will ever forget Elvis? Or the glamour
cars of the 1950s?

If you like working with other people’s money, then maybe day trading for a living is what you should be doing. This type of trading works daytime hours only, from the moment the stock market opens at 9am until it closes at 4pm in the afternoon, you can do a lot of trading in that amount of time. Or maybe you want to do day trading for livings with your own money, that way if you loose it, then you have no one to blame but yourself. However, it may be a good way to watch your money grow too. The following is the basic definition of what day trading is all about. Maybe it is your cup of tea, maybe not, only you can decide.

What is Day Trading?

Day trading for a living is when you take a position in the markets with a view of squaring that position before the end of that day. Day trading for a living mean a trader usually trades many times a day looking for fractions of a point to a few points per trade, however, by the end of the day he or she will close out all their positions. The goal of the day is to capitalize on price movement within one trading day. Unlike investors, the day trader will hold positions for only a few seconds or minutes, and never overnight.

What day trading really means.

The meaning of day trading is actually a misunderstood term. True day trading means not holding on to your stock positions beyond the current trading day, meaning your not suppose to hold on to your stock overnight. Trading this way is really the safest way to do day trading, this way one is not exposed to the potential losses that can happen if the stock marked is closed due to news that can affect the prices of your stocks. There are many people out there today who are not very good “day traders,” they are actually more like con artists just out to take your money. Because of greed, they will hold your stock overnight, setting themselves up for the catastrophic elimination of their capital. In day trading currency, the term “day trading” changes slightly. Because currencies can be traded 24-hours a day, there can’t’ really be any overnight trading. You can have open positions for longer than a day with active stop losses than can be activated at any time.

There are a few different types of day traders out there today, it can actually be subdivided into a number of styles.

Scalpers- This type of day trading involves the rapid and repeated buying and selling of a large amount of stocks within minutes or seconds. The goal here is to earn a small per share profit on each transaction while minimizing the risk.

Momentum Traders- This style of day trading involves identifying and trading stocks that are in a moving pattern during the day, in an attempt to buy such stocks at bottoms and sell at tops.

The advantages of day trading for a living is there are no overnight risks. Because positions are closed prior to the end of the trading day, news and events that affect the next trading day’s opening prices do not affect your client’s portfolio. Day trading for a living has a greater leverage on your client’s capital because of the low margin requirements as their trades are closed in the same market day. This increased leverage can increase your client’s profits if used wisely.

One of the issues most often raised by my clients is better time management. People have tried prioritizing tasks, blocking out parts of their day for certain tasks, implementing new systems and getting better at delegation. While all of those things can make a difference, there is something else that will have an even greater impact on your productivity. The key to high productivity is energy management more so than time management.

Let me start to explain this concept by way of an example. A couple of years ago, a client was frustrated with his productivity. He had just come back from vacation and wondered to me why he couldn’t be as productive on his return as he had been on the day before he left. On the day before his vacation, he was a whirlwind of activity – plowing through the important phone calls that had to be made, responding to all the important emails on his computer, and clearing his desk of all the paperwork that needed his attention. By the end of the day, everything important had been attended to. He had had one of his most productive days. But upon his return, he had fallen back into his routine – productive, but not highly productive. He wanted to know how, or if, he could be highly productive on a daily basis. The answer is yes and no…

The reason for each answer has to do with energy management. Good energy management can allow you to be highly productive on a regular basis and poor energy management can keep you at average productivity or worse. Everything we do – from making sales calls to conducting meetings and presentations to attending little league games – requires energy. Most of us fail to take into account the importance that energy plays in our lives. Without the right amount of energy, properly focused and applied, we simply can’t be as productive as we could otherwise be. Certainly, even with a poor level of energy, we can be productive – most everyone is. We’re just not highly productive. Think about your day. Do you get up feeling tired? Do you put yourself on “cruise control” with a steady flow of caffeine throughout the day? Is your mental capacity diminished by mid-afternoon? Are you too tired to be active with family or outside interests in the evening?

Energy management has even greater impact than just physically getting through the day. I don’t know about you, but when most people get tired their creativity drops, their persistence abandons them, and they get a bit edgy and less tolerant of people and challenges. A drop in energy impacts virtually every area of our lives.

What affects our energy levels? You already know the answer to that question. Nutrition, sleep, stress, physical fitness, attitude, emotions, and environment are the major influencers of our levels of energy. How do you improve these aspects of your life so you maximize your level of energy throughout the day? Easier said than done. After all, we all pretty much know that these things affect us but haven’t done much about them so far. Usually we have a hard time making changes because our motivation is lacking. On the other hand, many of us know people who were out of shape, found out their health was in permanent jeopardy, and then found a way to get fit. It’s all a matter of self-motivation. How would your life be different if you were highly productive in your sales efforts on a consistent basis? What difference would it make if you had good levels of energy throughout the day – every day?

How to become highly productive is too much to cover thoroughly in a simple article, but we can touch on some good ways to start improving your energy management.

Nutrition: Most nutritional experts agree that eating a number of modest meals throughout the day is much better than a couple of big ones. Don’t forget to include protein with every meal.

Stress: There are no such things as stressful situations. It’s our reaction to events that causes us to feel stress. You know what works best for you to reduce your feelings of stress. Set time aside to take care of yourself throughout the week. If you don’t take time, soon enough you’ll have no choice due to health issues.

Physical Fitness: Do I really need to go into this? Doing something is better than doing nothing at all.

Attitude: Our attitude colors our view of our past, our present and our future. Most people allow the world to determine what we hear and see, which determines how we see the world in general and how we see our own world specifically. Start to take control of what you mentally and emotionally feed yourself. Cut out the negatives (like the news on TV) and start introducing positives (like listening to personal growth tapes or CDs).

Another critical key to effective energy management is to understand the many positive implications of stretching our abilities and then taking time to recover and rejuvenate. Regular recovery and rejuvenation are essential to becoming highly productive. I can’t stress enough the impact that regular rejuvenation can have on your energy, attitude, creativity, enthusiasm, and spirit.

Let me finish by getting back to the client example I started this article with. My client wanted to know how, or if, he could be as highly productive on a daily basis as he was on the day before his vacation, and my answer was yes and no. The yes part of the answer is that you can be highly productive on a regular basis, day after day, by managing your energy and the things that influence it. On the other hand (the “no” part of the answer), it’s impossible to be highly productive without allowing your body, mind, emotions and spirit to recover and rejuvenate regularly. Remember, when we’re tired we tend to slow down, make more mistakes and have a harder time being creative. After all, the main reason vacations exist is to allow us to recover and rejuvenate. You can accomplish more, with less effort and more creativity by backing off from time to time to recharge. Choosing how and when to recharge throughout the week is another story…

To recap what we’ve discussed in this article, the key to being highly productive in any endeavor is to manage your energy. By attending to your physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs you can accomplish more with greater enthusiasm, greater creative and greater enjoyment than ever before.

The most renowned type of male hair loss is a continuing hair thinning state called androgenic alopecia more frequently acknowledged as male pattern baldness that comes about in mature male individuals and many other species.

Besides, pattern hair loss is also genetic, & the gene is transferred to an infant from either mum or dad, and not just the mum, as had been earlier understood. Pattern hair loss in guys is the most regular brand of hair loss, and more often than not means a reducing hairline and hair loss on the top of the skull. The origin of baldness in blokes is dihydrotestosterone, or DHT for short, which is a by product of the male hormone testosterone. A further source of baldness in gentlemen is hairstyle.

Baldness is not just a human feature. Hair loss is a state where there is no hair present in the spot where it grows, regularly this is on the head & crops up in either humans & wildlife. Baldness in guys is prominent in view of the fact each gentleman has a baldness causing factor in his body’s make-up.

Hair loss is undeniably an alarming thing to endure, specially for gentleman, where this is much more meticulous. Blokes who are not satisfied with their physical figure may possibly opt for prescription medications that are able to stimulate the regrowth of hair cells and aid to avert further hair loss. Are you worried about hair loss? If so then visit Advanced Hair Studio today!

What leads to male-pattern hair loss is when the hair strands begins to shrink due to a buildup of the hormone testosterone and a few of the natural body chemicals. What most people often recognise is that the consequence of hair loss are related to several things that frequently have little or nothing to do with hair increase or hair loss. Male hair loss, male pattern baldness or androgenic alopecia, is an inherited form which causes male baldness or considerable male hair loss in roughly about 66% of all blokes.

Wireless barcode scanners are a clear example of the best just having got better. Much like Alexander Graham Bell’s wired telephone that got eclipsed by the cordless phone which became a craze across millions of households, wireless bar code scanners have become a mega-hit with an ever-increasing number of business entrepreneurs making the upward shift to realize greater productivity day in day out. To put it simply, wireless barcode scanners offer you all the benefits of your regular barcode scanner or barcode reader and then, some more!

But hold on just yet, while wireless barcode readers and scanners are blitzing the market, you still need to which type of the device you need to best suit your business needs before going ahead and making a purchase. You need to very clearly articulate the reason for wanting to move into the wireless barcode scanner space and the plausible reasons for wanting to go wireless could be any of the following:-

* You need the freedom of mobility to be able to capture information away from your computer because of the spatial location of your tagged products

* You might want to collect the data away from your computer but be able to sync it or upload it once you get back to the origin i.e. the computer

* You might not only want to collect data away from the computer but also be able to log on via wireless networks to a database and post the captured information

Thus simply put, do you need a simple barcode scanner with a really long cord or do you have a genuine need for a wireless barcode scanner? And once you do a cost comparison on the various types of the barcode readers and barcode scanners, both wired as well as cordless, you will know exactly how much you are paying for what, and how much you are likely to benefit from the application of the device. Accurate information capture, ease of the information capture, speed at which different materials can be barcode registered and tagged, exquisite levels of data control are just some of the innumerous benefits that this technology promises for the user!

Finally a key thing that you need to keep in mind is that implementation of a new technology by itself does not guarantee success. You need to handle the change from one level to the next very well and proactively too, as in the case of wireless barcode scanners too. People management as part of change management is crucial to the success of your business and this should be given core focus. New technology is useless unless its espoused as a unifying cause by all in the work force. Once you have mastered the change in people, you have truly put yourself on the road to progress. Experience the wonders of wireless barcode scanners and be awestruck!

Anyone who reads this book cannot come away unmoved–cannot come away unchanged–cannot come away unenlightened.

Carlos Bulosan was born in 1913 in Pangasinan, in Luzon, in the Philippines. He was the son of farmer.

The first few chapters of the book detail his life in the Phillippines, working on a farm, plowing with a carabao and struggling with his family to make a living. After a difficult childhood, he immigrated to the United States in 1930.

Mr. Bulosan tells of the struggles, prejudice and injustice suffered by he and other pinoys as they manage to eke out a living in their new country. Carlos worked in the fisheries in the Northwest for a time. He eventually wound up in California where he did migrant work for many years.

Few books detail the struggle of migrant workers and immigrants as well as this book. If you read The Grapes of Wrath-compound the situations, add a big helping of racism, changes the characters to brown and you might get close to the meat of the book.

This first hand account of the farm worker in California in the 30s and 40s is often brutal. It reminds the reader of recent events where the victim was too brown, too black, too poor or any of the above and in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Parallel to this struggle is the struggle of the Mexican-American. To the scholar and to those who lived the farm worker experience, the reading will make the similarities apparent. His participation in attempts to unionize the workers in that era is one example.

The book gives the reader a glimpse of the prejudice apparent during his era. Some stores in California, at the time, had signs that read, “Dogs and Filipinos not allowed.”

The book shows the ugly underbelly of America. Carlos suffered beatings, threats and ill health due mainly or in part to his struggle in labor. Yet, through the years, Mr. Bulosan maintained a strong love for America. In fact, the book ends with a statement that no one could destroy his faith in America.

For those interested in the history of the Asian-American experience, for those who want to understand the past and for those who just love a great book-American Is In The Heart is for them.

Gene Smith is a writer from West Virginia. He spent 20 years in the Navy where he experienced the association of many Filipinos, their stories and an occasional sign that read, “Sailors and Dogs Keep Off The Grass.”
